Denitrification is the microbial process of reducing nitrate and nitrite to gaseous from of nitrogen such as nitrous oxide and nitrogen. While, anammox reaction (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) is a process in the nitrogen cycle. It is the oxidation of ammonium to nitrogen and water.

The similarities between Denitrification and anammox reaction are both involved in the release of fixed nitrogen from the soil.

One of the most significant and widespread uses of the anammox reaction is the treatment of sewage and wastewater to remove ammonium.
