Cholesterol can be described as the organic, fat-like steroid which is found in cells of an organisms body.

A person with a genetic disorder for high blood cholesterol will inherit the trait in a genetic manner from his family. He will have genes which allow for high levels of cholesterol to be produced in the body.

On the other hand, a person who eats a high - fat diet will have high levels of cholesterol due to his diet. He will not carry the disorder from his family and will neither pass on the high cholesterol situation in his offsprings.
