A. Hemoglobin oxygen saturation would be decreased in the erythrocytes of bisphosphoglycerate mutase deficiency as compared to a normal Individtual. o

B. Hemoglobin oxygen saturation could be increased or decreased in the erythrocytes of individuais with bisphosphoglycerate mutase deficiency as compared to anormal individual. The effect of this deficiency would depend on glycolytic flux

    A. Hemoglobin oxygen saturation would be decreased in the erythrocytes of bisphosphoglycerate mutase deficiency as compared to a normal Individtual.

    Explanation:

    2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (BPG) is an intermediate compound formed during glycolysis, in the pathway to pyruvate formation. In a normal individual it is abundant in RBC where it stabilizes hemoglobin molecules and therefore aiding unbinding of oxygen molecules in tissues. Consequently its concentration affects oxygen affinity of hemoglobin in red blood cells.

    Based on this the oxygen saturation level of an individual with bisphosphoglycerate mutase deficiency will be very low;

    because of low affinity of oxygen for hemoglobin in the RBC of such individuals from lack of stabilization and unloading activities of 2BPG.
