In type 1 diabetes, insulin production from pancreatic beta cells is reduced as these cells are destroyed by a person's own immune system. This results in less or no insulin production. When insulin is not present to facilitate the body cells to absorb glucose from the blood, most cells use fatty acids to produce ATP. The triggered catabolism of triglycerides in adipose tissue results in overproduction of by-product called ketones or ketone bodies. These are the organic acids that accumulate. The buildup of ketones causes blood pH to fall and the condition is known as diabetic ketoacidosis.
