Which type of explanation would describe eating in terms of the hypothalamus affecting insulin production which affects the availability of glucose in cells?

    a) physiological

    b) ontogenetic

    c) evolutionary

    d) functional

    Answer:

    a) physiological

    Explanation:

Physiology is one of the several branches of biology. In physiology, functions of several body parts are explained. It explains how various cells, tissues, organs and the organ systems of an organism work cooperatively to perform specific functions. For instance, the physiology of the digestive system would explain how an organism intake food which is then digested by the enzymes and juices released by several organs of this system.

Similarly, physiology explains that insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. Insulin makes the body cells to absorb glucose present in the blood. The secretion of insulin is regulated by the hypothalamus. As the blood glucose level rises after digestion of carbohydrates eaten in food and the absorption of glucose in the small intestine, the hypothalamus signals the pancreas to release more insulin into the blood. This increases the availability of glucose to body cells.
