A cell undergoes meiosis to produce gametes for reproduction. Meiosis is a type of cell division that results in the four daughter cells (gametes) with each of the daughter cell having half of the parental chromosome.

Meiosis involves two genetic divisions; Meiosis I and Meiosis II. Meiosis I, specifically in Anaphase I, results in the pulling apart and separation of homologous pairs of chromosomes. Hence, the resulting pairs of sister chromatids have half of the parental genetic content (chromosome). e. g A diploid cell (2n) gives rise to two haploid (n) daughter cells after meiosis I.

Therefore, after completion of Meiosis I and inception of Meiosis II, the cell's genetic content is said to have been halved.
