In terms of shared derived characteristics, the lophotrochozoan clade have an evolutionary novelty that is unique to it.

In terms of homology, the lophotrochozoan clade are Monophyletic, i. e they are made up of an ancestral species and all of its descendants. All are similar in characteristics resulting from a shared ancestry.

In terms of homoplasy, the lophotrochozoan clade have similar area correspondence between the parts or organs of different species acquired as the result of parallel evolution or convergence.
