The dome shells are more rounded while the saddleback shells are flatter with raised neck openings.

    Explanation:

Dome shell tortoise has one very important advantage that saddleback shell tortoise. Dome shell tortoise protects itself better from the enemies as it can put its head into the shell and block the entrance into the shell while saddleback shell tortoise is not able to do this.

However, saddleback shell tortoise is more likely to reproduce and to get their head up high to eat something that is above them.

Both types are vegetarians and eat cactus fruits, vines, grass, etc. The difference is that the dome shell tortoises were found in highlands rich with grass, while saddleback shell tortoises were found on islands.

Also, saddleback shell tortoises are more flexible that dome shell ones.
