Volvox is a genus of Chlorophyta. It is a kind of green algae belonging to the family of Volvocaceae. This genus forms the colonies of 50,000 or more cells. These live in freshwater habitat. They were reported for the first time by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.

The significance of the cytoplasmic network of Volvox is that there is a development of complex biochemical communication that develops in between the cells within the colony without any need of nervous system.
