Platelets can be described as fragments from the cytoplasm which are made from the megakaryocytes taken from the bone marrow. From the bone marrow, they enter directly into blood.

The function of platelets is majorly in blood clotting. Platelets form clumps at the site of blood vessel injury hence causing a clot to be formed. The life span of the platelets or thrombocytes in the blood is eight to nine days. Phagocytosis of the old platelets occurs in the liver as well as spleen.
