    Insulatory mechanisms control the extent of heat loss or gain through heat transfer. This includes movement, sweating and dilation of superficial blood vessels. Shivering is an involuntary rhythm of contraction of muscles that serves to generate heat during low temperatures. Increased metabolic rate of the liver when the environmental temperature is very low causes generation of extra heat.
