    The side of the mountain which is direct with the flow of the motion of air is called as the windward side. The side on the opposite is termed as the leeward side.

    When the air hits the windward side, it exerts a force to rise above the mountain. It gets cooler and which results in the condensation of the water vapours. Due to condensation, rain occurs more on this side.

    As the air moves upward to the leeward side, the moisture is lost and the air becomes drier. Hence, the leeward side of the mountain will receive lesser rainfall.
