You need to prepare a heparin IV bag of 25,000 units in D5W 500mL. Your pharmacy usually uses 2.5mL of 10,000iu/mL to make these bags, but the only available strength of heparin in your pharmacy is 10,000iu/10mL. What volume of heparin needs to be added to the IV bag?

    25 ml of heparin 1V will be added in the bag.

    Explanation:

    Number of units per ml = 25000/500

    C1 = 50 units/ml, V1 = 500ml

    10,000 iu / 10ml

    Number of units per ml available = 10000/10

    C 2 = 1000 units/ml

    so for 25000 units to be in the solution

    25000/1000

    from the formula C1V1=C2V2 to make dilutions

    50*500 = 1000 * V2

    V2 = 50*500/1000

    = 25 ml

    25 ml of heparin will be needed to add in the IV bag.
