    Explanation:

Placenta is an essential organ that develops to connect the unborn baby with the mother womb. The placenta is connected to the fetus through the umbilical cord. All essential nutrients, gases such as oxygen, and other substances are transported from the blood of the mother to the baby via placenta and umbilical cord.

Along with supply of essential substances, the waste products generated by the fetus such as carbon dioxide, waste after food digestion etc. are sent back through the blood vessels of the umbilical cord to the placenta of the mother.
