When gases escape downward out the tail of a rocket, they push upward on the rocket.

    Explanation:

Newton's third states that to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Examples

If you hit your head on a wall, your head exert a force on the wall, the wall also exert an equal but opposite force on your head, which will cause pains on your head. When you jump, your legs apply a force to the ground, and the ground applies and equal and opposite reaction force that propels you into the air.
