Eutrophication (a. k. a hypertrophication) is when a body of water becomes overly enriched with minerals and nutrients which causes excessive growth of algae. This process can lead to oxygen depletion of the body of water.

Eutrophication increases production of algae and aquatic plants, depletes fish species, generally deteriorates the quality of the water.
