The synthesis of membrane carbohydrates starts in the endoplasmic reticulum, but it is in the Golgi complex where they are modified and grow by adding many new monomers to form complex carbohydrate molecules. Figure 1. Carbohydrates in the plasma membrane.

The carbohydrates are the source of energy in the organisms. The synthesis of carbohydrates takes place initially in the endoplasmic reticulum of the cell. But the further processes like modification takes place in the golgi complex. In the modification process many new monomers are added to the carbohydrates to form complex carbohydrates.
