ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate. It is a high energy molecule that is produced during the oxidation of glucose in the cell. ATP release loss of energy when the high energy phosphate group is cleaved off from the ATP leaving ADP behind.

This energy is used by various metabolic reactions to occur. So ATP is used as the energy currency of a cell and without ATP no metabolic activity is possible which will result in the death of the cell.

So ATP has an essential and important role in cell metabolism.
