    Answer: The 5 major building blocks of a cell are proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, ATP, and nucleic acids.

    The functions performed by these building blocks are:

    Proteins perform many different functions. One of their major functions is to form different structures such as hair, nails etc. Carbohydrates are used as a source of energy by the cells. Lipids perform an important role in maintaining the integrity of the cell because it is a major component of the cell membrane. ATP is the major molecule which performs the function of carrying the energy in its phosphate bond. The nucleic acids such as DNA perform the function of storing the hereditary information on the organism.
