The phosphorus deficiency in the blood serum is known as hypophosphatemia. It also leads to several bone diseases like the osteoporosis, when the balance of phosphate and calcium in the body gets lost.

If a person has low levels of phosphorus in their blood, phosphorus may be "stolen" from bones to make it available for cellular molecules. ATP, ADP, cyclic AMP, sugar-phosphate backbone of DNA polymer and RNA polymer are the molecules that require phosphorous as part of their structure.
