It binds to the A3 portion of the of cytochrome oxidase also known as the complex IV. This prevents the use of oxygen and the body will be unable to produce energy in the ATP leading to cell death.

    Thus, if a cell is exposed to cyanide, the cyanide will be found more in the mitochondria.
