    cells want the highest ratio of suface area to volume, as it makes it most efficient to get materials in and out.

    Explanation:

    this is why cells are small. if cells were super big, it would like a long time fro materials to travel from one end of the cell to the other. this would lead to a buildup of toxic chemicals and things they want to remove. a large surface area means that there is more space for materials to go in and out.

    Answer: When the cell increases in size, the volume increases faster than the surface area, because volume is cubed where surface area is squared. When there is more volume and less surface area, diffusion takes longer and is less effective ... this is actually why cells divide.
