    The answer is transcription.

Helices is just the plural term of a helix. DNA's shape structure is a helix. If you do not know what transcribing means, it just means taking or writing down information from somewhere else. This is an easy way to remember what transcription is since this is just kind of where messenger RNA is created by transcribing the DNA's code. If you do not know what translating is: remember in perhaps a math class when you would have the lessons about translations and reflections? Translating was just moving a shape without changing its form or size. You know when people who speak another language often have a translator? They repeat the same words back to you in a language you can understand. This is exactly what a translation is. Translation in protein synthesis is just the decoding of the message written down in transcription. It is translating the base pair codes into an amino acid sequence.

You would always write something down before asking for a translation from someone. Therefore, transcription comes first and translation comes second.
