Psychoactive drugs change mood or behavior by acting on the brain.

Psychoactive drugs are substances that can affect the individual's perception, mood, consciousness even behavior. The targets of their action are neurotransmitters in the brain or neuroreceptors. Different neurotransmitters and their function are affected as a consequence of different drug. Some of them increase the activity of neurotransmitter (agonists) while others tend to decrease it (antagonist).

Even though these drugs are misused they also can have positive therapeutic effects such as anesthesia, recreation drug or drugs for the treatment of mental disorders.
