List two of the primary functions of the spleen in adult mammals

    1) It fights infection. Lymphocytes produced in the spleen fight disease causing pathogens. 2) It also filters aged erythrocytes, platelets and blood-borne antigens. The spleen filters blood and destroys old blood cells by sending them to the liver and elsewhere. The spleen also removes foreign matter such as bacteria and produces lymphocytes, cells that are essential for immunity.
