    Myelin is a sheath that works as an insulating layer, formed around nerve cells axons. This sheath is made of proteins and fatty acids and it allows electrical impulses to transmit faster along the nerve cells because it insulates the impulse and increases the rate at which the signal is passed along an axon. So a myelinated axon is like an electrical wire although it does not form a single sheath over the entire length of the axon. Instead, each myelin sheath insulates the axon only in different single sections separated from each other by short gaps called nodes of Ranvier.
