The run off and leaching of chemicals from fertilizers end up in rivulets, lakes, ponds, rivers and other water sources. Nitrate fertilizers and phosphates encourages the rapid growth of algae and vascular plants. This in turn reduces the availability of light and oxygen in water. This makes uninhabitable for some species.
