Pernicious anaemia is a health condition in which the body not have enough red blood cells as a result of the intestine not been able to absorb vitamin B12 and this vitamin is essential in red blood cell formation. This is because a special protein called intrinsic factor binds vitamin B12 for proper absorption. In atrophic gastritis the stomach lining is weakened already and the body's immune system attacks the intrinsic factor since its an autoimmune condition.

A laboratory test should be taken to check the presence of Helicobater pylori, a type of intestinal bacteria that causes atrophic gastritis to know levels of improvement.
