    To make sure the ground beneath does not collapse and the building does not sink.

    Explanation:

    Tall buildings have massive structures. This puts more pressure on the ground below it, and if there is too much pressure and not a stable ground structure the building will collapse and sink into the ground.

    In order to make sure the buildings do not sink, they make a wide ground structure to decrease pressure on the ground.
