Catastrophism referred to the theory that earth's rock layers were formed in a global followed by uplifting of mountains and rocks over short, violent period which is most likely in recent past.

Animals and plants which lived in those catastrophic areas were made extinct. Paleontologist Georges cuvier and french anatomist were the ones which were leading in catastrophism
