Atrial natriuretic peptide is the hormone which decreases cardiac output by decreasing blood volume and preload. It is a peptide secreted by the cardiac atria responsible for promoting salt and water excretion and lowering the blood pressure. It is produced in response to renin-angiotensin whenever there is an increased blood volume and is a powerful vasodilator. The production of atrial natriuretic peptide is stimulated by the stretch of the atria and is antagonistic to aldosterone and angiotensin II.
