Explain how scientists use geological time to determine the age of landforms

Scientists observe the layers for evidence of similar rock types and fossil formations to determine the age of landforms. If they find the same fossil in two different locations, scientists may conclude that those fossils are most likely from the same time period.

o determine the relative age of different rocks, geologists start with the assumption that unless something has happened, in a sequence of sedimentary rock layers, the newer rock layers will be on top of older ones.
