Bacteria in plaque may ferment food particles resulting in the production of acids

. Acids would slowly but painlessly wear off the enamel resulting in the development of small holes and cavities. if the decay is allowed to reach the dentine and the pulp cavity, there is severe pain nad therefore it is necessary sometimes to extract or remove the tooth. At the initial stages, drilling the holes and filling it with dental amalgam can prevent further decay of the tooth.

    a) Tooth decay occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches), such as breads, cereals, milk, soda, fruits, cakes, or candy are left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth digest these foods, turning them into acids. Which damages the enamel and then damages the dentine towards the nerve ends.
