As the water molecule absorbs the heat energy and gains higher and higher kinetic energy, they move rapidly and collide with each other with higher frequencies - the water temperature rises. During the phase transition, the temperature of the water does not rise further but remain constant. This is because the energy absorbed is now channeled towards the overcoming of intermolecular forces by the molecules in the transit to the next phase (therefore the energy absorbed is used to perform work).
