The hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico is not unique; at least 200 dead zones exist at estuaries and along seacoasts worldwide. These low-oxygen regions share many of the same causes, and they all have ecological and economic repercussions for ecosystems and people. Fortunately, we can pursue strategies to lessen the number, severity, and impacts of dead zones.

Find causes, consequences, solutions.

What are:

-reduction of fertilizer use to decrease nutrient pollution from farms

-construction of wetlands to absorb nutrients

-policies to promote no-till agriculture

    These are all solution.

    Explanation:

This is a solution because; increase in fertilizer use increase nutrient pollution in aquatic bodies causing nutrient pollution by (NPK fertilisers) from farms run off which increases the build up of algae in water, (Eutrophication). After algae death they are decomposed by decomposing bacteria. These bacteria uses the aquatic oxygen for the breakdown. This leads to death of the aquatic organisms since the water is depleted of oxygen further adding organic mater to the water, which are further decomposed, thus further reducing the oxygen levels.

construction of wetlands to absorb nutrients; wetland stores nutrients, filters water so that debris does not clog lake water ways, thus promotes water aeration which improves oxygen level of water and conversed soil nutrients.

No-till agriculture conserve soil nutrients, by preventing soil erosion, thus improving the natural nutrients of the soil. It also improve soil structure and compatibility.
