How does an animal become aware of a stimulus?

    Animals normally only respond to stimuli which they select; they filter out certain stimuli that surround them, and react to others they choose to accept.

    Since constant exposure to a sensory stimulus reduces our sensitivity to it, we are able to shift our attention to other things in our environment rather than focusing on one overwhelming stimulus.
