Convection is defined as the transfer of heat through the movement of a fluid which could be liquid or gas between regions of different temperature.

Convection occurs primarily in the Earth's core. Radiation from the Sun is first transferred to the surface of the Earth by conduction.

Subsequent contact of the atmosphere with warm/hot surfaces transfers thermal energy which heats up the rest of the air through convection.
