Why is it necessary for vertebrae to be hollow in the center?

    It allows the vertebra to stack upon each other and form a hollow tube in the center which holds and protects the spinal cord and the nerve roots. It is essential that a body has nerves, and so with the holes, the nerve roots are protected.
