An aquifer is a water bearing formation within the earth crust.

In Geology, an aquifer is said to be a porous and permeable rock unit.

When an aquifer is over pumped, there is increase in pressure within pore spaces. The increase in pore pressure can lead to the aquifer being damage and a total collapse of the rock's framework. Over pumping aquifers leads to production of more sand and earth materials on water.

It can also lead to total blockage and damage of the aquifer.
