How do cells know what their function is?

    Cells do not 'know' what to do - they just do a specific thing because the proteins they contain have caused that certain thing to happen. DNA gives instructions that order the cell how to put together its proteins; it specifies what building blocks make up different proteins, and what order they should be put together.
