The amount of snow brought into a glacier and determines if it will advance or retreat. When the snow gains is greater than the amount of ice and water it loses, the glacier's budget is positive and it expands, therefore the glacier advances.

If the opposite occurs, the glacier decreases in volume and is said to have a negative budget. These glaciers melts on their edges and begins to retreat. They are therefore, receding Glaciers.
