Sporophytes and gametophytes are the two alternative stages of the life cycle of the plants or algae.

    Explanation:

In many plants and algae, there are two different stages of the life cycle. Spore-producing plants or algae called sporophytes which is diploid and Gametes forming plants known as gametophytes.

Sporophytes are diploid spore-producing plants. These spores go through the fertilization process and create haploid gametophyte.

Gametophytes are haploid gamete forming plants or algae. Gametes rise to diploid sporophytes. The zygote goes through asexual reproduction to create a similar multi cellular individual.

Seporophytes and gametophytes are: the resulting meiospores develop into a gametophyte ... The mature gametophyte produces male or female gametes (or both) by mitosis. The fusion of male and female gametes produces a diploid zygote which develops into a new sporophyte. This cycle is known as alternation of generations or alternation of phases.
