What advantage does the shape of a red blood cell provide?

    The advantage of red blood cells being biconcave in shape is that the surface area is increased to allow more hemoglobin to be stored in the cell. This means that the red blood cells can acquire a greater volume of oxygen than if they had a flatter membrane.
