Communication between neurons occurs via chemical messengers called the neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters are stored in small packages called vesicles at the axon terminal of a neuron. When the electrical impulses activates the neuron, these neurotransmitter are released into the synapse by the vesicles fusing with the membrane of the axon and emptying its content. There are several kinds of neurotransmitters and each has a different function. Like the AMPA excites the neuron and the GABA inhibits the excitation of the neuron.
