There are multiple reactions fungi can have to pollution, pollutants may exhibit toxicity and cause changes in fungal community composition, but they also possess a range of mechanisms which create resistance or tolerance.

Many of these mechanisms can result in pollutant transformation to less-toxic forms, and are important components of natural biogeochemical cycles for major elements, metals, metalloids and radionuclides.
