Answer is, the magnetic and electric component of the electromagnetic wave travel (1) at right angles to each other. An electromagnetic waves is propagated when the electric and magnetic field component oscillate at right angles to each other. A changing electric field will produce a changing magnetic field and a changing magnetic field produces a changing electric field. This makes the electromagnetic wave self propagating and does not need a medium or matter to travel through.
