Dermatophytes is a common group of fungi which includes Microsporum, Epidermophyton and Trichophyton. These cause skin diseases in animals including humans. These fungi can cause infections in hairs, nails and skin and feed by obtaining keratin from cells. These usually not invade the living tissues but only infect the superficial layer of the of the outer skin. The skin diseases caused by these fungi include ringworm, athlete's foot and jock itch.
