    Most of the coal fields in the world are located in Eurasia, North America, and Australia. Even though there's coal fields in Africa and South America too, they are much less, and much smaller. Since the coal originates from a single geological period, the Carboniferous, and it is formed by specific types of trees, it is a nice evidence that the continents were all once merged together, where the same species of trees, in a same or similar environment, existed and died off, thus giving the material for the coal we use in the present.
