Reduction in genetic diversity in monoculture plants reduces resistance to diseases, infection and pest, therefore makes these plants more susceptible to diseases and pests attacks., thus low products yields and sustainability.

. Thus because of absence of genetic diversity as a result of cultivating the same type of crops, year in-year out, on the same piece of land, there is little chances of variation, which reduces diversity among the plants. Therefore if there is an outbreak of a particular diseases in the plant population, which starts with a plant, assuming that the other plants were genetically different from the infected plants, they would developed resistance, and therefore be able to resist and escape the diseases effects. However since they all have virtually similar genetic traits due to low diversity, the diseases will affects them all, with the likelihood of wiping out the entire population.

Thus sustainability and product yield is also affected.
