The independent and dependent variables are the two key variables in a science experiment. The independent variable is the one the experimenter controls. The dependent variable is the variable that changes in response to the independent variable. The two variables may be related by cause and effect.

    Contrast:

Independent variable this variable is controlled or changed during the experiment, when the variable that is being tested, dependent variable is measured. That is the independent variable is manipulated to yield results from the dependent variable

    Comparison:

During the experiment both values of the variable change. Both variables are used to tell a story during the experiment.
